This section provides an outline of the expected content of each contact an Intermediate has with a client. It is based on evidence of good practice and should be considered a minimum standard for provision of quality stop smoking service.
General principles for working with smokers are as follows:
Ask (don’t tell). Your clients are the experts in their own smoking behaviour and what will help them to quit. Ask the right questions and your clients should do most of the talking, rather than you.
Would you like help to stop?
What will be good for you about being smokefree?
Would you like to know more about…?
Focus on solutions (not problems). You need to know the consequences of smoking, but when your clients are planning a quit attempt it’s less useful to talk problems. Instead help them feel good for planning a quit and build them up with positives.
All intermediates should have a support person from within Manchester Stop Smoking Service allocated to them. If you need in depth help (e.g. update training on any aspect of the work, help with setting up your paperwork and other systems etc.) please cont your named support person. You can find out who this is from the stop smoking office on 0161 205 5998.
Thank you for getting involved in this important area of work. Together, we can make sure that all Manchester residents (and those working or receiving healthcare in the city) have easy access to high quality help with stopping smoking when they are ready for it.
