Manchester Stop Smoking Service works in partnership with agencies across the city to provide information on the benefits of going smokefree to help build tobacco free communities.
Parts of Manchester have some of the highest rates of smoking and consequent ill-health in the country. However we also see a great deal of success with people quitting smoking in the city with close to 5,000 people successfully quitting at four weeks with the help of the service in 2008/2009.
Manchester Stop Smoking Service is part of the Public Health Development Service which sits in Manchester Community Health the provider arm of NHS Manchester.
Manchester Stop Smoking Service aims to:
- Reduce smoking prevalence in Manchester
- Priority groups
- young people
- pregnant women
- ethnic minorities
- routine and manual workers
- Improve ‘Quit Rates’
- Achieve the Department of Health targets

The MPHDS works to address health inequality in Manchester. Male life expectancy is the lowest in England, 72 years (half of difference from highest attributable to smoking). It is the second most deprived district in England 1 with a 37% of adult smoking prevalence.
The MPHDS provide information and support on smoking, alcohol, sexual health, drugs & harm reduction, mental health, exercise & activity, health trainers, healthy schools, falls prevention, coronary heart disease, healthy eating and health at work.
